Resveratrol Safety and Pregnancy

I have received this question the most so I felt a post is in order. First off – this is a decision between you and your doctor. I do not give medical advice only opinion. I have to get that out there so you know that pregnancy is very important process for a woman and the decisions you make affect both you and your little one growing inside of you.

Let’s first tackle the question of natural supplements versus synthetic supplements.

Do not underestimate this question as it is crucial you understand the difference. This is not some kind of marketing ploy to get you to purchase more expensive products. This is real and you need to be very concerned about what you are doing to your body.

Shaklee did research into this question by bringing together many different scientist and they conducted a study of people who have taken natural supplements, a multivitamin and people who did not take any supplementation for the past 25 years.

The reason I point to them is that I am unaware of any other natural vitamin company who has done this level of research over this period of time.  The study concluded that natural supplementation was the best way to go. They also found that people who took a generic vitamin had worse biometrics than people who did not take anything at all!

If you think about it, it kind of makes sense. Our bodies know how to break down vitamin C and all these other vitamins and minerals that occur naturally in our environment. Makers of these cheap vitamins create them synthetically.

It’s a lot cheaper to create vitamin C in a lab as opposed to buying the raw materials (food), shipping them to your lab, extract the vitamins, create the pill, running test to make sure they are of high quality, and shipping them to your door.

That’s why you can go out and get a $5 per month multivitamin at your local store. Never mind that it is putting you in danger. Let’s all take up smoking and get it over with.

If you plan to take supplements, always go with the “all natural” products!

Now for the pregnancy part…I do not see a reason to not take a good all natural multivitamin and take a product that has resveratrol…after the pregnancy and breast feeding is done.

There has not been enough testing of resveratrol and the long term effects because it is new science. I do believe resveratrol is a great supplement to add to your daily regimen but I think it would be unwise to take during pregnancy.

The woman’s body is really different in the stages of pregnancy. There are so many changes that happen through this wonderful process that adding something in high doses might not do you good. It could have opposite results.

God built woman with the ability to birth and gave your body the tools to make sure your child will be the best it can be. You have all the tools to have a wonderful healthy child. This is a short time in your life.

Honestly 9 months plus another 6 months to a year for nursing is a short time in a 70 plus year lifespan. Adding something like resveratrol can be done later.

Of course, during pregnancy I would suggest taking a good “all natural” vitamin. This will help in so many ways and you can feel confident you are doing the best thing for yourself and more importantly…your child.

Do not take any supplements that are not all natural!!!

Remember that your eating decisions affect both you and your child.

The topic of mixing red wine and pregnancy is greatly influenced by perceived benefits and potential risks. There are indeed many health benefits to red wine, but the risks of alcohol to the baby during pregnancy are great. If you are looking to enjoy the health benefits of resveratrol, then you may be advised to simply take supplements, instead of mixing red wine and pregnancy.

Antioxidant benefits of resveratrol in red wine

Benefits that accompany moderate red wine consumption, including the antioxidant benefits of heart-healthy resveratrol, have been well documented in numerous medical studies. Antioxidants are substances that protect cells from oxidative damage caused by molecules called free radicals – which damage cells’ proteins, membranes and DNA allowing cancers to develop. Kids with FAE, FAS, or ARND can appear overly belligerent or stubborn. They may even score well on intelligence tests, while still having behavioral deficits that interfere with their ability to succeed. It is essential that their parents, teachers, and health care professionals receive education and training to help them.

Chronic alcohol abuse causes FAS, FAE, and ARND Full-blown fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) is caused by chronic alcohol abuse during pregnancy and is seen in children of chronic alcoholic mothers. Fetal alcohol effects (FAE) and alcohol related neuro-developmental disorder (ARND) may occur with only occasional red wine consumption or binge drinking. Therefore, mixing red wine with pregnancy can harm the child, even with moderate drinking.

Prevention is the key

FAS and fetal alcohol related conditions are completely prevented by avoiding alcohol during pregnancy. When red wine is consumed during pregnancy, it is passed across the placental barrier from the mother to her unborn fetus. An unborn baby is less equipped than its mother to eliminate alcohol from its system. The unborn fetus receives a high concentration of alcohol that lingers longer than it does in the mother’s system. Moderate wine consumers should stop mixing red wine and pregnancy because of the perceived risks. Those who previously consumed red wine in moderation, primarily for its health effects, may still believe that red wine would be beneficial to them and their baby during pregnancy, but may be advised against it. Resveratrol Supplements: Red Wine Option for Pregnant Women

The topic of mixing red wine and pregnancy is a controversial one. A new 2008 report issued by the U.S. Centers for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC) reinforces earlier warnings regarding the dangers of fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) and stresses to women if they drink alcohol during pregnancy—so does their baby.

Heavy alcohol consumption throughout pregnancy has been linked to developmental delays, language problems, hyperactivity, and symptoms known collectively as fetal alcohol effects (FAE). Excessive alcohol consumption during pregnancy causes very serious defects in the central nervous system, impaired language and memory skills, and abnormal facial features.

Collectively these defects are referred to as fetal alcohol syndrome or FAS. The CDC estimates over 6,000 U.S. babies are born annually with FAS. The U.S. Department of Health is trying to reduce the incidence of alcohol-related birth defects by asking women to abstain from consuming alcohol during pregnancy.

While doctors acknowledge that moderate red wine consumption may be beneficial to health, women are asked to avoid mixing red wine and pregnancy. It is impossible to determine how much alcohol is “too much” during pregnancy, and pregnancy is no time to experiment with the health of an unborn child.

Women who enjoyed moderate red wine consumption prior to pregnancy may consider taking resveratrol supplements to receive some of the same heart-health benefits of red wine while avoiding alcohol consumption.

This ensures that you and your baby enjoy all the health benefits of resveratrol supplements, but none of the risks associated with mixing red wine and pregnancy.

Red wine credited with heart-health benefits The Copenhagen City Heart Study, which monitored 13,000 men and women aged 30 to 70 between 1976 and 1988, found that those who drank red wine had about half the risk of dying at any given age from heart disease than those who never drink wine. Antioxidants like resveratrol, as well as the alcohol in red wine, contributed to the positive outcomes.

Another study by French researcher Serge Renaud and colleagues published in 1999 in the Archives of Internal Medicine brought attention to wine drinkers who had the lowest risk for cardiovascular disease and overall mortality. This study was limited to middle-aged men, but “for all-cause mortality, daily wine intake was associated with a lower risk.”

Resveratrol supplements protect body from free-radical damage.  Resveratrol, a principle antioxidant in red wine, protects the body from free radicals—harmful elements that attack and damage healthy cells. Preventing free radical damage is important to preventing cell damage and cancer development, and it is essential to maintaining overall health.

Reports from Mayo Clinic reveal resveratrol may also be the key ingredient in red wine that helps prevent damage to blood vessels, reduce bad cholesterol, and prevent blood clots. The alcohol found in red wine also appears to be heart healthy. Easily absorbed in the body, resveratrol helps prevent heart disease and reduces lung tissue inflammation in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Because red wines are so rich in resveratrol, they help protect against certain cancers, as well as heart disease. Resveratrol supplements option to red wine during pregnancy provide heart-healthy benefits of resveratrol without the risk of alcohol consumption. Since there is no way to determine at what point “too much” alcohol consumption occurs during pregnancy, and the potential risks outweigh any benefit, pregnant women are advised to avoid mixing red wine and pregnancy.

Keys To A Healthy Life Expectancy

A healthy life expectancy is what many people are trying to find these days. We are doing more in our daily lives with reducing hazardous chemicals that are killing our bodies like household cleaners, pesticides and preservatives in food, and eating healthier diets. But, is this good enough?

To create a healthy life expectancy we must also supplement our daily diets. With more and more fast food establishments popping up all over the place, we tend to opt of the fast and easy food and disregard the health impacts of our poor decisions. To offset our desire for the fast and cheap we take vitamin supplements. This helps but will we get the benefits we seek?

We have to do more to help our bodies. There is an observation that was made almost 200 years ago called the French Paradox. The observation was that people in southern France had low incidence of coronary heart disease even though they had what we might call a Western Diet…a diet that is rich in saturated fats. The thought at the time was that red wine or alcohol plays some kind of role in helping the people of southern France protect themselves from the devastation coronary heart disease inflicts on the body. It is now understood that it is not the red wine but a compound called Resveratrol that protects the body from disease. Eat more fruits and vegetables. Your food should have color and lots of it. Make sure that when you are fixing your evening meal or your afternoon lunch that you have plenty of fruits and veggies to go along. This is very important to provide your body with vital vitamins and nutrients along with much needed fiber. And, remember to eat an apple when you feel like munching on something.

Watch those calories. Don’t buy the sugary sweets, sodas, or chips at the grocery store. Keep these things out of your house and keeping your calorie intake low will be a lot easier. If you are one of those people that like to munch, get some grapes or some low sodium nuts. Just make sure NOT to eat while watching TV. This is key. You want to have a constant feeling of hunger. And, for those really strong cravings do some pushups for 2 minutes. That will take the hunger away.

Speaking of exercise…you want to have consistent exercise every day. Just make sure you have talked to a health professional before you commit to an exercise routine. Pick an exercise program that you feel comfortable with and make sure there is a strength training component to it as well. Aerobic activity is great for circulation, endurance, and a quick calorie drop, but strength training will provide you with lean muscle mass and a calorie incinerator. You will be burning calories in your sleep. Just make sure to change it up when your body gets used to the program. Most programs today take this into account.

Add a good vitamin regiment to your daily diet. Even with adding more veggies and fruits, this oftentimes is not enough. Make sure you stay away from the generic off the shelf stuff. I know this stuff is cheap but you are not doing yourself any favors. Actually you could be doing more harm than good. Generic vitamin C is cheap because it is a synthetic vitamin C, but our bodies cannot break these synthetic vitamins down. The small molecules and compounds end up sitting around in our bodies and could do more damage than you think. Make sure you are using all natural supplements. These are supplements made from real plants and our bodies really benefit.

By doing these five things, you will have a healthy life expectancy. You will feel better and reduce the visits to the doctor. Just remember it is not too late. It does not matter what age you are currently at. Make the change and reap the rewards. The Resveratrol Benefits are being felt every day. For those who have never heard of Resveratrol, Resveratrol is a compound found naturally in various fruits, roots, and nuts. I didn’t really feel much. Not until about 4 days later. We were flying back home and my son who is four years old was sitting in the plane next to me. The stewardess came by with drinks for my son and myself. I ordered and orange juice and my son ordered a water. I placed his water on the tray in front of him and went back to reading the magazine that was in my hands. My son was fidgeting around and kicked the tray with his foot. Needless to say I could see out of the corner of my eye, an almost full glass of water was no longer resting on the tray. It was being catapulted in the direction of the lady on the other side of my son. While sitting there looking at my magazine, I reached out with my left arm and secured the glass of water back to the tray. It was like something out of a movie.
